• Stay away from any damaged structures: Some buildings may look safe, but it might be dangerous to enter due to water and storm damage. Only enter the building if the officials have cleared it. If you see damaged powerlines and other debris on the ground, DO NOT go close. Report fallen powerlines to the local electrical company.
• Document the damage and call insurance: If you notice any damage on your property, try to take photos of the damage and be as detailed as possible. These photos will help with the insurance claim process. Call the insurance company right away to assess the level of the damage of your property.
• Water and food safety: After a hurricane or a flood, the tap water source could be contaminated. If you suspect the water source is contaminated, do not use it in any way that can enter your body. That includes drinking, brushing your teeth, making ice, and washing dishes etc. Drink bottled water or boil the water for safety. Check out your local health department’s guideline for water safety. For foods, if it touched floodwater, throw it out to be safe. Also, if there is a power outage, check your refrigerator for spoiled foods.
