The Effects of Smoke and Soot Damage to a Home

Following a disaster, homes usually necessitate extensive restoration due to potential hazards and instability. This is a typical occurrence that can happen in the event of a fire causing damage to your home.

What is Soot and Why Is it Dangerous?

Certain occupations have a higher likelihood of exposure to soot, but homeowners may also encounter this hazardous substance. Soot is commonly found in areas where humans live, such as household fireplaces, basement furnaces, and engine exhaust. The small size of soot particles may have potential health risks.

Can Baking Soda Be Used to Put Out Fires?

Grease fires have the potential to cause personal injury and property damage, thus making them a hazard. The stains on the stovetop are often caused by oil, grease, fat, or by the heating up of deep fat fryers. The fires are significant and have the potential for rapid spread. Fire & Smoke Damage Restoration Frequently Asked Questions

What steps are involved in removing smoke odor from a home or business?
A fire damage restoration professional like ProTech Restoration will take care of smoke removal and smoke damage restoration. If you decide to take the smoke mitigation issue into your own hands, here are the main steps to follow:
1. Let It Breathe: Allow fresh air to circulate by opening windows and doors to ventilate and reduce lingering smoke odors.
2. Absorb the Smoke: Use odor-absorbing materials like baking soda, activated charcoal, or commercial odor absorbers to help eliminate smoke odors.
3. Repaint Ceilings & Walls: Apply a fresh coat of paint to ceilings and walls to cover and seal in smoke residue, reducing the odor.
4. Details Matter: Light Bulbs and Air Filters: Replace light bulbs and clean or change air filters, as they can trap and emit smoke odors.
5. Wash Windows and Window Coverings: Clean windows and wash window coverings like curtains and blinds to remove smoke residue and odors.
6. Refresh Cabinets and Upholstery: Clean and deodorize cabinets and upholstery to eliminate embedded smoke odors.
7. Cleanse Carpets and Rugs: Thoroughly clean and deodorize carpets and rugs, as they can trap smoke odors deep within their fibers.

"Had a great experience working with Marshall when we had an emergency leak at my mom’s house. He immediately started working to salvage what we could. I felt like he absolutely understood the urgency, and treated my mom like his own! He and the rest of the team were super easy to work with and answered our (many) questions along the way. They were very transparent about the process which was extremely helpful as this was our first time with this kind of issue in 30+ years of owning the house. We so appreciate ProTech for aiding us during our time of need."

"My experience with ProTech was wonderful from the first visit thru the last. Ben did a great job of evaluating the work that needed to be done and explaining everything to me. Frank and Sergio were great to work with because they were pleasant AND they were so very careful about everything they did. All in all, I give the ProTech team an A+!"

"I had a pipe burst and subsequent leakage into my basement. At first I thought that we maybe stopped it in time since we could not see obvious damage but Marshall at ProTech said it would be a good idea to check it out anyway and came out within a couple of days. I’m so glad he did since there was more damage than we anticipated. Marshall explained the damage thoroughly using his imaging techniques and provided a quote within the day. Pricing was good and our insurance accepted the proposal immediately. The ProTech team was able to do the water damage mitigation about a week after the incident and on a Saturday no less. Everything was done super quickly and professionally. While I do not want to deal with any more water damage, the repairs using ProTech were painless. I would recommend this company and especially Marshall to anyone in the same situation."
