Fire Damage Restoration Procedures

ProTech Restoration

(847) 558-7765

While fire damage restoration services are essential for all property fires, the situation of each home or building is unique. In other words, a large commercial building may require board up services while a smaller building may need content restoration as many personal items have been affected by the smoke and soot. Here you can find a checklist of each procedure that may be required for your property.

As soon as ProTech Restoration arrives, they will review this checklist with you after their initial inspection of what had happened during the fire, informing you of the source and scope of the damage as well as the duration and restoration cost estimates. You will then be able to review the details of each procedure to get a better understanding of the process as well as why it is needed.

Type and Source of Fire Damage

The information provided below explains the type of fire damage as well as the source that had caused it. This was based upon our initial inspection which includes photographic evidence to show the type and extent of the damage. Based on this information, we will then begin to develop a custom plan for restoring the property to its original condition as efficiently and effectively as possible. However, please understand that ProTech Restoration cannot begin the work until the areas have been released by your insurance adjuster.

The following can include one or more types/sources of fire damage on your property:

Natural Fire: The damage was caused by outside vegetation, such as shrubs, trees, or bushes (forest fires) that have burned and made contact with the structure; the property contains exterior smoke residue.

Protein Fire: The damage was caused by the oven or stove, containing a strong, burnt food smell; smoke residue is present on heat-related appliances.

Furnace Malfunction: Any heat-related appliances, such as a space heater or furnace, have malfunctioned and caught fire, allowing soot and smoke residue to cover all affected surfaces.

Complex Fire: Both synthetic and natural sources have caught fire; both surfaces contain soot and smoke residue; foul smoke odor is present within property; immediate corrosion control is crucial to restore all affected and at-risk materials.

Emergency Services

In order to save as much of the building structure and personal content as possible, your property will require one or more of the emergency services.

Immediate Fire Cleanup

Board Up Services: The property structure is at-risk of collapsing. It must be boarded up in order to stabilize its condition.

Furnace and A/C Inspection: Change furnace filter, place two layers of damp cheesecloth over supply and return registers; clean air ducts of any settled soot.

Disconnecting Power: In order to inspect all electrical appliances and circuits, the power will need to be temporarily shut off.

Electrical Appliance and Lighting Restoration: All damaged electrical appliances and light fixtures will be cleaned carefully, removing all smoke residue and returned to their original positions within the property.

Remove Debris: In order for the ProTech Restoration technicians to work safely and effectively, they will need to clear away any debris within the affected areas.

Emergency Water Damage Restoration

Water Mitigation: As the property structure may contain water from the firehose, it will need to be restored using specialized drying equipment and products. Inspection of the flooring and other building materials will also be done to identify and remove any remaining moisture.

Emergency Corrosion Cleanup

Smoke Residue Removal: As the byproducts produced from the soot and smoke can quickly cause severe corrosion to the affected surfaces, they must be treated immediately. A corrosion inhibitor will also be used to protect any at-risk surfaces of floating soot. This includes the following: stone, marble, grout, aluminum, appliances, glass, fixtures, etc.

Food Disposal: All areas of the property containing food must be emptied in order to eliminate the risk of odors. However, you will want to create a detailed inventory of each item thrown away for insurance purposes.

Odor control: This process includes increasing air circulation to remove any remaining smoke and soot particles, applying deodorizers, and installation of air filtration equipment, etc.

Clothing Restoration: Any clothing needed for immediate use must be delivered to a professional dry cleaner to remove all smoke and soot particles. ProTech Restoration will clean the remainder of clothing.

Additional Restoration Services

Hard Surface Floor Cleaning: All flooring that has been damaged will be effectively cleaned using specialized products that are designed to repair the damage for each type of material. They will then be covered for protection during the structural restoration procedure.

Structural Restoration: All soot and smoke residue will be removed from the flooring and walls. This process will be done by cleaning, deodorizing, and polishing all woodwork.

Carpet and Furniture Cleaning: All smoke and soot particles will be removed from the carpet fibers and furniture fabric. ProTech Restoration will use the hot water extraction method to return them to their original conditions.

Separation of Damaged Items: If your personal content was affected during the fire, they will be separated accordingly, informing you and your insurance adjuster of the items that can be restored and those that need to be replaced.

Cleaning of Drawers, Cabinets, Attics, and Closets: Especially for the insulation contained within the attic, each area will need to be thoroughly cleaned, deodorized, and restored of all soot and smoke residue.

Dry Cleaning/Laundry Restoration: Due to the fragility of clothing material, they will be restored by a special restoration dry cleaner. This procedure includes creating an inventory of each clothing article, bedding, window covering, etc., restoring them to their original condition, and delivering them to the property when the procedure is complete.

Odor Removal Services

As the fire will produce strong smoke odors that will quickly spread throughout the entire property, specialized products and techniques are required for removing them completely. However, please keep in mind that multiple treatments may be necessary, depending on the source and severity of the odors.

Thermal Fogging: This procedure will neutralize the odor by utilizing a powerful but safe deodorizer that will penetrate the smoke and eliminate the particles. But all children, pets, and plants, must first be removed from the property.

Ozone: This is an oxidizing product in which is produced by an ozone generator. Children, pets, and plants will also need to be temporarily relocated for a short time.

Air Scrubbers: Using HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filtration to eliminate the odor particles from the property, the cleaning and purifying process of the air is made more efficient. But please do not turn off this equipment during the deodorization process.

OdorKlenz Technology: This green procedure includes the deodorization and removal of smoke odor particles, using OdorKlenz air filters in traditional air scrubbers. Safe to use for children, pets, and plants.

Soft and Hard Contents Restoration

All smoke-damaged contents will be treated using advanced products and equipment. This includes furniture, upholstery, antiques, knick-knacks, and other personal content.

Hand Washing and Drying: When possible, each item will be carefully cleaned and dried by hand.

Ultrasonic cleaning: ProTech Restoration uses Ultrasonic tanks to clean particular items. These can include: collectibles, blinds, and other small items.

Furniture Restoration and Upholstery Cleaning: Professional equipment, products, and methods will be used to remove all smoke, soot, and odor particles from the furniture and upholstery fabric.

✔ Content Cleaning will be done by:

  • On-site
  • At ProTech Restoration facility

Pack-Out Services will be performed by:

  • ProTech Restoration
  • A qualified sub-contractor

Please keep in mind that while we do our best to restore as many building materials and content as possible, some items will require the help of a specialized restorer. This can include hiring a contractor for the cleaning of one or more of the following: electronics, appliances, air duct cleaning, etc.

"Had a great experience working with Marshall when we had an emergency leak at my mom’s house. He immediately started working to salvage what we could. I felt like he absolutely understood the urgency, and treated my mom like his own! He and the rest of the team were super easy to work with and answered our (many) questions along the way. They were very transparent about the process which was extremely helpful as this was our first time with this kind of issue in 30+ years of owning the house. We so appreciate ProTech for aiding us during our time of need."

"My experience with ProTech was wonderful from the first visit thru the last. Ben did a great job of evaluating the work that needed to be done and explaining everything to me. Frank and Sergio were great to work with because they were pleasant AND they were so very careful about everything they did. All in all, I give the ProTech team an A+!"

"I had a pipe burst and subsequent leakage into my basement. At first I thought that we maybe stopped it in time since we could not see obvious damage but Marshall at ProTech said it would be a good idea to check it out anyway and came out within a couple of days. I’m so glad he did since there was more damage than we anticipated. Marshall explained the damage thoroughly using his imaging techniques and provided a quote within the day. Pricing was good and our insurance accepted the proposal immediately. The ProTech team was able to do the water damage mitigation about a week after the incident and on a Saturday no less. Everything was done super quickly and professionally. While I do not want to deal with any more water damage, the repairs using ProTech were painless. I would recommend this company and especially Marshall to anyone in the same situation."
