Dangers of Sewage Backups

Sewage backups can wreak havoc on your home, as they occur when sewage is forced back into your property through drains and plumbing fixtures due to issues with the sewage system. This results in the influx of raw sewage and waste materials that can be absorbed by porous building materials and furnishings, causing devastating damage. Unfortunately, porous materials affected by sewage are often unsalvageable and must be removed.

Sewage is a critical issue that can render your home unsanitary and cause health hazards. Raw sewage and airborne pollutants can lead to respiratory issues, infections, or illness. Never attempt to handle a sewage-related dilemma yourself, as it can jeopardize your safety and that of your family. Instead, call our expert specialists to effectively and professionally manage the clean-up process.

Why Keeping Your Sump Pump Working During Fall and Winter is Important?

As the weather gets colder, your sump pump still works hard to keep your home dry. But if it fails—because of freezing, heavy rain, or a power outage—you could end up with a serious sewage backup. During fall and winter, frozen discharge lines and melting snow can put extra pressure on your system. That’s why it’s important to test your sump pump, clean it, and make sure you have a backup power source. A little maintenance now can help you avoid a big, messy problem later.

How Does Sewer Pipe Relining Work

Sewer problems don’t always require a major excavation. With trenchless pipe relining, we can repair damaged sewer lines from the inside—quickly and with minimal disruption to your property.

This method involves inserting a resin-coated liner into the existing pipe. Once cured, it forms a solid, long-lasting new pipe within the old one. It’s an efficient, mess-free solution that can extend the life of your plumbing system by decades.

If your property has recurring backups or signs of pipe damage, pipe relining could be the solution that saves you time, stress, and repair costs.

Sewage Backup Cleanup FAQs

Preventing a sewage backup is definitely something we recommend to all our customers. Here are a few practical tips that really help:

  • Avoid flushing things like wipes, grease, or paper towels — even if they say “flushable,” they can cause blockages.
  • Have your sewer lines inspected regularly to catch any issues early before they turn into a big problem.
  • Installing a backwater valve is a smart way to stop sewage from flowing back into your home.
  • Keep an eye on tree roots near your sewer lines since they can grow into the pipes and cause damage.
  • And if you ever notice slow drains or hear gurgling sounds, don’t wait — schedule maintenance as soon as possible.

Taking these steps can go a long way in protecting your home and avoiding costly repairs down the road!

It’s strongly advised not to. Sewage cleanup requires proper PPE, industrial-strength disinfectants, and specialized equipment to ensure the area is thoroughly cleaned and dried. Improper handling can lead to long-term health risks and property damage.

The cleanup process can vary depending on the size of the affected area and the extent of the damage. For smaller backups, cleanup may take 1–2 days. Larger incidents or those involving structural damage may take several days, followed by drying and sanitizing.

"Had a great experience working with Marshall when we had an emergency leak at my mom’s house. He immediately started working to salvage what we could. I felt like he absolutely understood the urgency, and treated my mom like his own! He and the rest of the team were super easy to work with and answered our (many) questions along the way. They were very transparent about the process which was extremely helpful as this was our first time with this kind of issue in 30+ years of owning the house. We so appreciate ProTech for aiding us during our time of need."

"My experience with ProTech was wonderful from the first visit thru the last. Ben did a great job of evaluating the work that needed to be done and explaining everything to me. Frank and Sergio were great to work with because they were pleasant AND they were so very careful about everything they did. All in all, I give the ProTech team an A+!"

"I had a pipe burst and subsequent leakage into my basement. At first I thought that we maybe stopped it in time since we could not see obvious damage but Marshall at ProTech said it would be a good idea to check it out anyway and came out within a couple of days. I’m so glad he did since there was more damage than we anticipated. Marshall explained the damage thoroughly using his imaging techniques and provided a quote within the day. Pricing was good and our insurance accepted the proposal immediately. The ProTech team was able to do the water damage mitigation about a week after the incident and on a Saturday no less. Everything was done super quickly and professionally. While I do not want to deal with any more water damage, the repairs using ProTech were painless. I would recommend this company and especially Marshall to anyone in the same situation."
