Rug Cleaning Guidelines
Rugs are an excellent choice to make your home more interesting and colorful, however they can also be quite delicate as well. It is essential for you to clean them on a regular basis, so they can remain nice and fresh, adorning your home for as long as possible. There are things people do that end up making their rugs worn and damaged and those should be avoided at all costs. Here are some of them and how you can do better for your rugs:
- Regular cleaning and vacuuming are key to keeping things fresh. You can simply flip them and vacuum them twice a month for the most part. You can also use a brush vacuum or a rotating beater bar on the backs of wool rugs, but for the most part vacuums will be a better choice, as they will protect the fibers of the rug. Synthetic rugs on the other hand are more sturdy, allowing you to use the beater bar or brush regardless of the side of the rug.
- Avoid vacuuming any tassels or fringes, unless you want to have them sucked up by the vacuum cleaner. That can severely damage your rug if you’re not careful. In most cases all you’ll really need to do is fluff them up a bit so they can untangle or clean a bit.
- Use carpet shampoos and sprays sparingly and with care. They are usually made for a specific type of carpet, such as the wall-to-wall variety. Make sure you check out what the labels say about how such chemicals should be used. Whenever you use one, make sure you rinse your rug completely and thoroughly. Anything left will simply act as a magnet for dirt. Some chemicals may even damage the colors of the rug, so test them out with a white cotton towel after applying on a small spot to check whether that will happen or not.
- Clean up any spills as soon as possible. Leaving them on will only make things extremely bad, the more time passes. Blot out the spot right away and use a clean cotton towel to absorb as much of it as possible. Press from the outside to the inside and keep blotting. Do this until you have absorbed as much as you can, then move on to cleaning it. Remember to never rub in circles or rub at all, otherwise you will only aggravate the situation. If you have spilled red wine, then you will need to clean it with a mix of hydrogen peroxide and dish soap as you blot it. Milk can be cleaned with a detergent and water.
- You can neutralize and remove the unpleasant odors of pet “accidents” by mixing vinegar and water in a 1:3 ratio. Blot the spot with the mixture and you should feel the results soon. You can also neutralize odors by sprinkling baking soda on the spot, letting it stay like that for about an hour and then vacuuming it up.
